, the local police chief here confirmed that the gunman was shot dead at 4:48 eastern and officers used lethal force to take him out. he confirmed that the suspect which we identified as james lee entered the building at approximately 1:00 eastern. he carried with him a vest, and also a gun. in addition, we learned a few minutes ago he had two boxes. and two back packs. police here are still work ing under the theory that the boxes and back packs still in the building behind me may contain explosives. we learned that negotiation process or a communication began with the gunman. it went on for a couple of hours and then around 4:00, things were not going well and the tension was ratcheting up. at this point, tactical officers had moved in to the ground forearea of the discover -- ground floor area of the discovery building and they were able to see the gunman james lee with a camera that was now in place. just before 4:48, the suspect pulled out the handgun and pointed it at the hostage. one of the hostages. it was at that point that the police here felt that the hostages were in imminent dange
day weekend. sarah simmons is joining us live with the latest. >> reporter: well some people have already had their vacation plans interrupted early. from what we know this morning, we know that folks on the north carolina island of ocracoke have been evacuated as well as hatteras island is also being evacuated. now we've learned within the hour. and hurricane earl is now a category three. it has been downgraded but make no mistake about it here, it can still do a lot of damage with winds packing up to 125 miles per hour right now. maryland emergency officials are meeting today about the impact it's expected to have on ocean city. the mayor there said they have about 200,000 people there now leading up to this big labor day weekend. city officials are also warning swimmers about the dangerous riptides there in the water. now here in d.c. they don't expect much from hurricane earl. however, residents are being asked to prepare for power outages and flooding similar to what we have seen during the severe storms lately. virginia governor bob mcdonnell is expected to declare a statewi

. bill karins tracking this storm very closely for us and how does it look right snow. >> the storm weakened from a category 4 to a 3. looks like we're going through another burst of intensification. you can see it right there. a clearing of an eye and that is usually the storm is tightening itself up and the winds will increase slightly during the day today. warm water out ahead of it and we do not expect much more weakening by the time it gets out towards north carolina. the hurricane hunter aircraft is just on its way in. now the next storm, the next hurricane hunter aircraft will be in there probably another three hours from now. until then we'll have to look and get estimates on the satellite of how strong earl is. the wind field 125 mi-mile-per-r winds. as we go into friday, our computer models, we have been watching these closely. when you see the pink line to the right, that would be a hard-glancing blow. the line all the way to the left in the blue would be huge problems. we'll end up with something in the middle and that's what the hurricane forecast is as of now. cat 3 to

the defense secretary robert gates is in iraq meeting with u.s. troops as they formally end their combat mission there. gates's plan touched down hours after president obama told americans it was time to turn the page on iraq. fewer than 50 nourks troops rema remain. president obama did not declare victory in iraq but did say the u.s. gave the iraqi people a chance to shape their future. tracie potts has the latest from washington. >> reporter: now with the military operation in iraq over, president obama says our next big mission is right here at home. >> the american combat mission in iraq has ended. >> reporter: with dwcombat troo out of iraq, he announced a new mission. >> restore our economy and put the millions of americans back to work. >> reporter: he blamed massive deficits of financing a decade of war with borrowed money. his focus now, jobs and afghanistan. >> open-ended war serves neither our interests nor the afghan peoples. >> reporter: republicans criticize the president for opposing the bush surge that turned it around in iraq. >> some leaders who fought tooth and nail to
that responsibility. to use those resources properly. to rebuild their country and establish some kind of democratic government there in iraq. you know, he also pointed out, however, that since the u.s. military will remain there for some time, he's still optimistic that all of the u.s. military could be out by the end of 2011 and pointed out that if that were to change, the iraqis would be the ones that would have to change it and gates himself doesn't think that would be politically viable for the iraqis to do that. and, finally, when asked if the war was worth it, gates, actually, thought about this for a minute before saying, look, the problem is no matter how much success the u.s. military may have had, how much success the u.s. government will have in the coming months in helping put together some kind of democratic institutions there in iraq, the war itself will always be clouded by the fact that the u.s. went to war on an invalid proposition that saddam hussein had the weapons of mass destruction. >> all right, nbc jim mic miklaszewski at the pentagon for us. thank you, mik. >> you bet. >>>

they found 20- pounds of this ammonium, a chemical used to make explosives. this is the bomb squad. they said they cannot deal with this type of situation and they called in the atf instead and these two separate scenes. it wasn't just chemicals found in the upland court. the bodies of two women overnight. the police say it was a grisly scene. this is the home of 67-year-old dena allen. allen and her friend, carol smarkt, have been missing since wednesday. this is also a home where suspected killer efren valdemoro was known to say, sometimes trying to pass himself off as allen's son. here's where the story takes another turn -- police say the bodies of these two women had been in this home for a while and apparently during that time, allen husband, who reported her missing, had been living in the home. so he's been arrested and is in custody at this hour. how is this all connected to valdemoro? well, that's still unclear. police say all of this may not be connected to the hercules case in which valdemoro is suspected of killing an elderly man on friday. that man's son is still missing. if we
